Being born and grew in the time when the war was finished. So, I did not know how the feeling of a real war is… what I have known and heard about the war that all came from books or movies. Now, I am studying in Korea, a country was considered to have a similar history as Vietnam, but currently Korea is still divided into North and South, while my country has been united, North Korea follows Communism while South Korea follows Capitalism. For a while staying here, I became to realize what is called “Temporary Peace”. The Korean people are always ready for a WAR which can be broken out any time, Korean men attend military services earnestly and it is obligated, even though they can hold on their studying in University to accomplish their military responsibility and continue study later. Weirdly, their enemy is their own brother, same language, same origin, but opposite ideals of…the persons who hold the highest power!!
(Differences...!)
Recently, the situation becomes hotter when North Korea successfully test nuclear boom at 9:54 am, 25 May 2009 (Korean time); withdraw from the cease-fire agreement signed after the war in 1950-1953; perform a series of short-range missile tests; and preparing a long-range missile test expected able to reach Alaska… While South Korea was put in the highest alert for the war; the military-trainings between Korean troops and their ally, American, were performed; modern high-speed war ship equipped with directing-missile sailed to the sea border of North-South Korea,… I am living in Gwangju, the most southern Korea, sometimes I could see the fighter jets passing the sky, maybe for practicing…
(Be always in DOUBT...! Be always READY!)
That is the political aspect but in the social aspect, this is really a pain, the war in 1950-1953 made huge number of people die and many of family suffered from their separation, North or South. In the family reunification meeting hold by governments between husband & wife; father or mother with their children; brothers & sisters;… usually occur in heart-breaking scene…
(War is not our concerns but our families...!)
This tragedy is a hot topic for many film-makers to break people’s hearts! Among these movies, I have watched by chance a movie entitled Taeguki (태국기), meant Korean Flag or an alternative name Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War (태극기 휘날리며). I watched this movie two years ago just by chance, at the first I thought it as an action movie having such beautiful action scenes. At that time, I did not have any idea about a Korea with “Temporary Peace” and the long-lasting pain of the war in Korean people. The movies reflected the complex in human thoughts, in relationships, in dilemmatic situations,… fight for whom, for what; who are enemies; who are brothers,… yesterday, were brothers, today, are enemies,… the wives, the mothers waiting for their husbands, their boys in vain… and beside the war, whimsical things also occurred to the innocent people who were executed to death due to fake accusation,… even though the hero with his honor medal could not rescue his family from such injustice, witnessed his wife being shot to death… The movie made strong impression on me, broke my heart, rose a feeling in my mind, a feeling of sharing and sympathy…
In this time, I do not feel fear, I feel pain...
Even though the VN war has ended more than three decades ago, as a Vietnamese, I'm still feeling this pain among people in VN and living overseas. I do sympathize with the fear and tragedy that are constantly hanging over innocent people in both countries. I wishes every collision can be resolved soon peacefully.

Lần này trong hoàn cảnh như sắp chiến tranh này mới nhớ lại cái cảm giác đó… híc híc
It's so rich in korea now. Everything is good, new, wired, and very convinient (compared with long ago, just after the korean war). Sometimes, in the morning, while I am taking a shower with warm water, I think if everything is gone after war, (everything like electrocity, warm water, internet, something to eat), I cannot imagine how I can survive. That kine of things are only in the movie, or novel. Like the Diary of a Young Girl Anne Frank, she had everything before the crazy things happened.
ReplyDeleteBut, everytime this kind of thought comes to me, I soon try not to think about it anymore. Anyway, life will go on right now. There is nothing to be afraied in advance.
